Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) Services - Rope Watcher

Rope Watcher™– Permanent Wire Rope Monitoring

Rope Watcher is a permanent wire rope monitoring system that continuously tracks the condition of steel wire ropes in service. As part of the Lifting Solutions Group, Certex UK supplies, installs and supports Rope Watcher systems to give operators real‑time visibility of rope condition and earlier warning of developing defects.

Rope Watcher is designed for safety‑critical, high‑duty applications where unplanned rope failure or downtime is not acceptable – such as offshore cranes, industrial cranes, winches and other mission‑critical lifting systems.

What is Rope Watcher?

Rope Watcher is a fixed monitoring device installed around the steel wire rope. As the rope runs through the unit during normal operation, Rope Watcher continuously monitors rope condition and detects:

  • Broken wires
  • Localised damage
  • Rope defects that may not yet be visible externally

When the system detects defects beyond a preset threshold, it generates an alarm, allowing you to investigate and act before a failure occurs.

Rope Watcher is designed to complement, not replace, traditional visual inspection and Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT), adding an additional layer of protection between scheduled inspections.

How Rope Watcher Works

  • A sensor head is mounted around the rope on the crane, hoist or winch
  • As the rope passes through the head during normal operation, the system monitors for changes in rope condition
  • The system compares detected signals against predefined thresholds
  • When those thresholds are exceeded, Rope Watcher triggers alarms or signals that can be integrated into your control or monitoring systems

This enables:

  • Continuous monitoring during real operations, not just during scheduled inspections
  • Early detection of rapidly developing defects that might occur between inspection intervals
  • Objective data to support inspection findings and decision‑making

Certex UK – Supply, Installation & Integration

Certex UK provides a complete Rope Watcher solution:

  • Supply of Rope Watcher units – selection of suitable models and configurations for rope diameter, application and environment
  • Mechanical installation – correct fitting and positioning of the Rope Watcher sensor on the rope system
  • Integration support – basic integration to your control/monitoring systems for alarms, signals and data outputs (in cooperation with your controls/automation teams as required)

Commissioning and functional testing – verifying operation and alarm thresholds, and confirming performance on site

Rope Watcher & ISO 4309 Rope Management

Rope Watcher supports an ISO 4309‑aligned rope integrity management regime by:

  • Providing continuous condition feedback between scheduled inspections
  • Supporting discard decisions with additional, objective data
  • Highlighting sections of rope that may require closer inspection or accelerated replacement
  • Helping to optimise rope life while avoiding extended use of damaged ropes

Rope Watcher works alongside:

  • Regular visual inspections to ISO 4309

  • Periodic Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) delivered by Certex UK

  • Planned rope lubrication, maintenance and change‑outs
