03/08/04 Certex to distribute modular spreader system

Certex UK, the nation’s largest distributor of lifting gear, has now been officially appointed as the main distributor for Modulift, a range of innovative spreader systems that can be customised and assembled onsite to suit all applications.

The full range – manufactured and patented by Modulift Design and Consulting Ltd. – consists of component spreader beams that are easily joined together by operators to create span capabilities of up to 53 metres.

Based on an easy-to-assemble ‘kit-form’ principle, the Modulift systems are both flexible and cost-effective and have the added advantage that lengths can be reassembled to create different configurations. Sizes progress from as little as 2 tonnes through to a super-heavy range with capacities ranging from 350-3000 tonnes. Span lengths are available from 200mm up to 53 metres.

Certex will use its UK-wide distribution network to raise Modulift’s profile throughout the lifting industry. Before this, systems have only been made available within the hire market. Of particular interest is the new ‘Portable Range’ that uses components that can be handled manually and has systems as small as 2, 6 and 12 tonnes especially designed to be transported easily between sites. With the exception of the longer struts in Modulift sizes 24 and 34 which need 2-4 people to lift them. All other components in the smaller systems can be carried and assembled by one operator.

The Portable Range lives up to its name in that, once packed away, the smaller systems take up no more space than an average car boot.

“The Modulift systems are ingenious in that they give users complete flexibility,” said Charles Gillespie, Sales and Marketing Manager for Certex UK. “Not only can our customers now build their own spreader beams to the exact widths required, but the spreaders can then be changed and re-assembled for future use. This, coupled with the fact that users will no longer have to purchase different sized beams for different jobs, brings substantial cost savings for customers.”

Selecting the most appropriate system for specific applications has also been simplified with a colour-coded ‘load versus span chart’ listing span widths in metres alongside safe working loads in tonnes based on a 45 degree base sling angle. The user simply matches up the two figures on the chart to find the required Modulift kit.

“We expect Modulift to prove very popular among a wide range of lifting applications,” said Charles Gillespie. “The heavy-duty ranges are built to rigorous specifications and withstand off-shore use and other tough environments while the new portable systems are already proving invaluable in the plant installation, engineering, and rail industries.”

Meanwhile, the manufacturers are continuing to meet customer demand and have introduced a range of accessories to accompany individual kits. The most recent development has been the introduction of handling cradles to carry loose components when the systems are not in use.

Other features include 50 tonne end units for the Modulift 70 Heavy range and 85 tonne end units for 110 Heavy range. Corner units are also available for square and rectangular frames.
