22/3/03 Lifting distributor launches protective equipment range

A new exhibitor to SED 2003 is lifting gear distributor, Certex UK. As the nation’s largest independent supplier of lifting gear and services, the company will launch a range of Personnel Protective Equipment for use in the construction industry. The range, designed and manufactured by UK-based Checkmate, features revolutionary fall arrest and height safety equipment designed to meet even the most stringent health and safety requirements.

The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) range includes the world’s first all-composite harness and shock absorbing lanyard. In total, there are 15 types of specialist full body harnesses, as well as shock absorbing and retractable lanyards, fall arrest blocks, tripods, davits and personnel evacuation devices. As well as textile products, visitors will also be able to find out more about Checkmate’s innovative modular temporary and permanent lifeline and rail systems both of which come in rigid and flexible materials. The lifelines are designed for use in the most tricky working conditions including horizontal and vertical applications.

All the PPE equipment is designed and manufactured in the UK using state-of-the-art water cutting technology to produce clean square edges that remain intact. Whereas in the past, textile safety equipment has tended to burr, oxidise and distort over time, the Checkmate range is cut and stitched to withstand tough wear and tear.

Every PPE item conforms to the latest EN safety standards and is tested using a 128 sensor interface monitor connected to an articulated manikin that stimulates the effects on the body during a fall from height. A dynamic test rig apparatus and an abrasion resistance machine are supplemented by a 75 metric tonne horizontal test bed.

David Flatman, Business Development Manager for Certex UK, said: “With workplace injuries now estimated to cost British employers a staggering £0.9 billion a year, quality personal protective equipment has never been more necessary. We are delighted to have the distribution rights for the Checkmate PPE products and will use the exhibition as an opportunity to demonstrate their special features.”

Certex UK, part of the FKI Group, will display PPE products along with lifting equipment from Elephant, Crosby, Parsons and Bridon on stand 901.
